So what do you do when your son goes on a school trip for 3 days, that means 2 nights away from home?
Clean your house from top to bottom, windows, wooden deck included, which you haven’t done since the last school trip? No.
Spend all this time catching up with garden work, weeding and planting those poor anemones which have been sitting at the courtyard for over a week waiting for their turn? No.
Inviting over your secret lover and stay in bed till the school bus brings back the entire year 4. ? No.
Spending time with your sis without any interruptions, no kids, no husbands, no house chores. Just the two of us. Yess! That is what I did.
The plan was to book a room in one of the hotels, but by the time we figured out how to manage her kids, who will pick up S. from kindergarten, who will do what, nothing was available.
But then again, do I need to book a room, when we have an entire apartment in a hotel by the lake?
The reason I don’t normally go anywhere in Hungary, I mean staying overnight, because once I start looking at the rooms, suites, I realise that our place is way much better than any hotel room, Presidential Suite in Kempinski included. So, why pay so much for something worse?
If I want to be around the capital, we have a place.
If I want to relax by the lake, we have a place.
If I crave mountain air, we just have to go home.
Waved my son and his friends good bye, shed a tear or two, then headed straight to my sis to pick her up.
The only thing what was spoiling it my (our, even my sis had it) cold or whatever was it. Been struggling with it for the past 2 weeks, with not much improvement. By now I think it is more of an allergy, which eases up in the mountains, or by the lakeside, gets worse in the city.
How am I gonna drink loads of Pina coladas when all I was craving is hot tea with lemon? Even driving was difficult. Try blowing your noise, sip tea, while keeping both of your hands on the wheel in a 10-2 o’clock position. I did ran into a few traffic cameras, I just hope I wasn’t speeding while doing all this.
Fantastic weather and clean shiny windows were awaiting us. The cleaning lady did a good job. So glad I’ve found her. Always hated starting the season with spider poo covered windows, cobwebs everywhere.
Happy to be there, happy to be with sis. The last time we had time together was last August in Norway. This time her plans to become pregnant overruled a trip abroad. My Iceland has to wait.
Spent time lazing around, reading mags, talking, swimming. Been to the steam in the evening, which you never do when you have kids. That is dinner time at home. Almost feeling guilty, just almost.
Since I never go without my son anywhere, he is more like my other half, so kept looking for him in his room, in the pool, had to consciously remind myself that he is not with me. Will I ever get used to it?
Better start, I know.
While sipping our pina coladas made the decision to try the lake round the following day. That was the plan earlier, but not feeling well almost put a stop to it. Booked two bicycles, the better ones, Cubes, and went to bed.
Sunny beautiful morning, relaxing low carb breakfast and we were all set. I am always up for a challenge. Haven’t been on a bicycle for the past 3 years, but my sis had practice, doing it almost every day , plus an avid TRX fan.
I know, for real cyclist it is a walk in the park, skip through a meadow…..
If you do it right, it is about 30 km. We decided to take it easy, stop whenever we want, though I regret not taking my camera with us.
Overall it wasn’t that difficult, especially with the stops we had. Visited the Botanical Garden in Pakozd (had fantastic views from a tower, pretty basic museum but great for kids, not much flowers ). Had ice cream at the Pakozd Military Park. We happened to cycle right into a ceremony of sorts, though didn’t stop us. It was a full blown military event with tents serving lunch for the soldiers who were just wondering around. Red everything that we needed to know (which they’ve taught us in school already) about the battle that occurred right over there, the purpose of it. Maybe I should take my son there this summer.
From then on we only stopped to take pictures, admired the little summer houses by the lake, the old buildings that once were busy with kids, employees with certain companies, now they stood almost abandoned. It sure had a certain retro feeling, back in the 70’s. The last bit was the nice one, by the lake, brand new cycling roads, but by then we were in pain. Without comfy seats, special cycling shorts it hurt so much. You know where, no need to describe it.
But, hey, we did it!
Celebrated it with sumptuous lunch at the hotel restaurant. Luckily they had all my favourites from the buffet, like greek salad, salad caprese, beetroot salad, smoked deer, tuna…had to refuel after all.
More sunbathing, reading followed, me taking sunset pics, sis catching up with her family.
How is it, that you are having so much fun, wish you never have to leave, but at the same time counting the hours till you get back home?
Because back home there is someone you love, someone who you love more than anything and anybody in the whole wide world, your child.
Some more time together back to Budapest, made her try the iceream at Fragola. Their pistachio cream icecream is out of this world. Glad they only open from April, otherwise I would end up seriously overweight. At least I’ll have the chance to loose whatever I gain now during the winter months.
They were due to arrive at 4.30. pm. Got there just after 4. when the bus pulled up.
My son got back. A little dirty, with half his clothes missing ( luckily the teacher found it and put it in a bag for us ), but he was back.
“I’ve missed you so much “ told him while walking to the car.
“I didn’t , sorry. “ my son said.
Though it hurt a bit ( who am I lying to , hurt a lot ), but that is life. He has his own life, his friends, he is growing up. I have to learn to let him go…slowly but surely…in time…
P.S.: Just before going to bed he did say that he missed my evening and morning hugs and kisses. My Big Boy.
